Once Upon A Recipe

I am joining Cathy @ A Bit Of The Blarney for her Once Upon A Recipe post. After reading here please visit Cathy to get some more recipes and read the stories attached to them!

My recipe this week is Pizza Dip and it's a real crowd-pleaser IF you have the right ingredients!
My sister-in-law Ann served this at one of her Christmas parties and we were all wild for it. I was having another party a few weeks later and called her for the recipe, she read it to me over the phone and I made it with very poor results.
I tried a few more times but I never could achieve the flavor or consistency of Ann's delicious dip. It wasn't until another sister-in-law asked me for the recipe that I decided to call Ann to ask what I was doing wrong before I passed on the recipe.
Well, when Ann read me the ingredients again I noticed that she had left out two very important ingredients the first time around (and they were the first two ingredients)!
I told her she was Laura Petrie! (I don't know if any of you remember the Dick Van Dyke Show episode where Laura left mustard out of a dip recipe she gave to her neighbor Millie!) Well, we laugh and laugh every time we talk about it, and I smile every time I make this NOW delicious dip for my parties!

PIZZA DIP

1 Cup Sour Cream
1 (8 oz.) Pkg. Cream Cheese (softened)
1 Pkg. Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
1 jar Pizza Sauce
1/2 teaspoon red pepper
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1/4 Cup chopped onion
1 lb. ground beef (you can substitute any ground meat, or use pepperoni or sausage instead)

Brown ground beef and set aside.
Blend sour cream and cream cheese.
Add red & black pepper, oregano, minced garlic, and onion, blend together.
Layer a pie tin with the cheese mixture.
Top with ground beef.
Pour Pizza Sauce on top.
Sprinkle shredded mozzarella over all.
Bake in oven 350 degrees just until cheese melts on top.
Serve immediately with sliced Italian, French, or Garlic bread.

ENJOY!
(And think of my sister-in-law Ann and Laura Petrie every time you make it!)

  3. Hi Eileen...this Pizza Dip sounds very good, but I think my family would disown me if I didn't have the TexMex Layered Dip we've had for the past 8 years, it's like a tradition now. I think I will give them the Pizza Dip for New Year's Eve though.

I see what you mean...it wouldn't resemble itself at all without the sourcream and cream cheese. :) Wanda

  4. I so remember that episode. So did she leave the ingredients out on purpose?
This recipe would be great if I didn't have to make it! Love Di

  5. Oh yes, Laura Petrie! My husband use to have a crush on her that went away as soon as she started on the Mary Tyler Moore show. He didn't like her nearly as well in that for some reason. Well I think he liked the homemaker Laura Petrie...not the working girl Mary Richards.
