There's something about this song "Try To Remember" that always makes me think of not only New Year's Eve and another year coming to a close, but it makes me think of life in general ebbing it's way to the finish line. I first heard this song on the radio when I was about eleven or twelve years old I guess, and I found it so hauntingly beautiful. I especially love the way Roger Whitaker sings it.
He doesn't sing the full lyrics to the end though, so I've written them here:
Try to remember the kind of September
When life was slow and oh, so mellow
Try to remember the kind of September
When grass was green and grain was yellow
Try to remember the kind of September
When you were a tender and callow fellow
Try to remember, and if you remember,
Then follow
Try to remember when life was so tender
That no one wept except the willow
Try to remember when life was so tender
That dreams were kept beside your pillow
Try to remember when life was so tender
That love was an ember about to billow
Try to remember, and if you remember,
Then follow
Deep in December, it's nice to remember
Although you know the snow will follow
Deep in December, it's nice to remember
Without a hurt the heart is hollow
Deep in December, it's nice to remember
The fire of September that made us mellow
Deep in December, our hearts should remember,
And follow
When life was slow and oh, so mellow
Try to remember the kind of September
When grass was green and grain was yellow
Try to remember the kind of September
When you were a tender and callow fellow
Try to remember, and if you remember,
Then follow
Try to remember when life was so tender
That no one wept except the willow
Try to remember when life was so tender
That dreams were kept beside your pillow
Try to remember when life was so tender
That love was an ember about to billow
Try to remember, and if you remember,
Then follow
Deep in December, it's nice to remember
Although you know the snow will follow
Deep in December, it's nice to remember
Without a hurt the heart is hollow
Deep in December, it's nice to remember
The fire of September that made us mellow
Deep in December, our hearts should remember,
And follow
I found this New Year's poem/wish online but there is no author to credit. I loved the sentiment though and I copied it for you:
May New Year's Eve find you seated around the table, together with your beloved family and cherished friends.
May what you see in the mirror delight you, and what others see in you delight them.
May someone love you enough to forgive your faults, be blinded to your blemishes, and tell the world about your virtues.
May you remember to say "I love you" at least once a day.
And may we all live in awareness of God's Love for each of us.
May what you see in the mirror delight you, and what others see in you delight them.
May someone love you enough to forgive your faults, be blinded to your blemishes, and tell the world about your virtues.
May you remember to say "I love you" at least once a day.
And may we all live in awareness of God's Love for each of us.
