New Year, New Promises

It's been years since I've made New Year's Resolutions because I hate to disappoint myself, I have always made all these wonderful promises to myself and then I end up breaking every single one of them.
But this year I'll give it one more try:

1. Instead of sitting at the computer so much, I'm going to try and exercise more, and I'm going to try and spend more time on my prayer journals.

2. I'm going to try and tackle projects around the house, both big and small.

3. And something I learned from Teresa @ Mysterri2me2 that I thought was a wonderful idea was trying to eat healthy one meal at a time.

4. I'm also going to try and continue with an earlier resolution of simplifying my life and purging it (and my home) of needless clutter. And I'm going to reinforce my commitment to less shopping and limit acquiring new things and try to make do with what I already have which goes along with trying to simplify.

5. I found a few websites that suggested some practical resolutions and also ways to obtain your goals and maintain those resolutions, and one of them was to remember to take the full year to accomplish some of the resolutions. Don't put pressure on yourself, the goal is to enact the resolution within the twelve month period.

6. Another practical resolution was resolving not to get discouraged by setbacks (both in failing to keep resolutions and in life in general), treat a setback as just that, a temporary setback and not a permanent failure.

7. Also, this last resolution is something I already put into practice this Season, and that is eliminating dreaded 'holiday tasks' and do only those you enjoy and have time for. And there were practical solutions such as ordering pre-cooked meals if you hate cooking, buy baked goods if you don't have the time to bake them yourself, use a gift-wrap service if that is a task you dread, and get pre-printed Christmas cards if you feel that writing out cards is too time-consuming. Don't go all out decorating if you don't have the time, and resolve that you will enjoy the little that does get decorated and you will give yourself a pat on the back for the things that do get done instead of berating yourself over the things left undone. There's always next year, and maybe you can concentrate on different tasks to be accomplished each year rather than putting the pressure on yourself to get 'everything' done each and every year.

This year for Christmas Eve I made a simple lasagna and microwaved some vegetables and set up in the kitchen for a serve-yourself style meal rather than plan a big sit-down dinner. And my son contributed a bag of salad, and we were good to go! Everyone enjoyed it and it wasn't much work or prep at all, and the lasagna was something that could be made ahead of time, my daughter popped it in the oven while some of us were at Mass and it was almost ready to come out of the oven by the time we got home.
Christmas Day I just made a turkey dinner and a Birthday cake for Jesus, the kids provided the rest of the desserts and it was a very relaxing day.
I also didn't decorate as much as usual this year, and to tell the truth, I didn't really miss the 'extras' at all. My daughter and I didn't do our usual 'cookie bake' this year either, but my niece did and so did my son, so my cookies weren't missed at all.
I didn't make myself crazy about entertaining either. I used a lot of disposable trays, plastic utensils, and Chinette plates, much like I do for the pool parties, and there were many foods that I just served right out of the containers they were purchased in rather than transfer them to 'pretty' serving bowls, so clean up wasn't too bad. It certainly wasn't a beautiful tablescape but nobody complained and it didn't make the food any less desirable and it didn't have an adverse effect on the flavor.
We didn't go overboard shopping this year either, so there wasn't much to wrap. What used to be a marathon session of wrapping gifts was relegated to my husband and he got it done in about an hour.
I have to say that I really enjoyed Christmas this year and I didn't feel the usual pressure of the holidays that I normally feel. I kept the traditions I enjoy and I eliminated those that take away the pleasure of the Season.

I can't remember ever keeping any New Year's Resolutions in the past, so we'll see how well I do this year.

The experts say to be patient with resolutions, it is said that it takes three weeks for something to become a habit and six months before it becomes part of your lifestyle.

Good luck to those who are making New Year's resolutions! And I'd love to hear what they are!

  1. MMMmmm, let me see.... Nope, I'm perfect. No need to resolve anything with myself!! HeHeHe....

I always have a list of things that I would like to better. But as you said it is an ongoing project and if you keep that in mind and your goals in focus, you can achieve whatever it is that you want. But you really have to want to do it.

Some people set unrealistic goals that they really don't want to do anyway. They're just setting themselves up for failure in that case.

You seem to really want to accomplish these goals Eileen as I remember you mentioning some of them before. Just let me know when you need a cheerleader and I will be there for you!!

Eating healthy has always been a goal for me. So I guess that is what I would continue to try to do. I just try not to think to much about it as it stresses me out more. Like t. said, one meal at a time! Love Di

  3. HI EILEEN-

Great ideas and goals - yup - all quite practical and life style simplifying - I am not big on resolutions - my focus word is "freedom",thanks to Cinner' and a blog friend of her's named Dina (I think), so as I reflect on that word I think natural changes will ensue, over time. No hurry.

Happy healthy 2010 to you and all your loved ones
    Love Gail

  4. Hi Eileen my dear friend...and thankyou for mentioning me in your blog : )

Let's just try focus on the good choices we make each day, and forget about 'ALL' the bad ones, they seem to get far too much attention anyway!

I like the idea of spending more time on a prayer journal, one prayer at a time, who knows what miraculous things could happen! When you write prayers down, you actually have a record of all your blessings! And miracles too! Let all of us Villagers and our families have a Miraculous 2010!!! (((HUGS)))) T

  5. Hi Eileen....I'm proud of your goals and resolutions. They seem like that they are ones that are attainable. I seem to set ones that aren't....so, I didn't set many this year. My main one is to drink more water. If I can do that and cut out on the amount of soft drinks that I consume, I know that I will feel healthier.
I hope that your new year is wonderful. I love blogging with you. You are a very sweet and dear friend.
    Smiles to you from Jackie

  6. Eilene, you do have a list of worthy things to strive for...anyone could benefit from doing them.
If I made any resolutions it would be to make each day special in some little way for my husband and myself...even if it's just sharing tea and biscotti...or wine and chocolate...and to be healthy and fit so we can both see 2020.

I wish all good things for all of us in the village.
    Enjoy the New Year Eileen!

  7. Eileen, I love how you are thinking my friend and I feel everything you are considering is attainable, and like Di says you have spoke of many of these things before so that tells me it is all very important to you especially to get healthy and exercise more. I think we all should de-clutter our lives, I did a lot of that last year and love the space it has created and how much tidier and cleaner my life and home is......big hugs to Jayden and Mia......:-) Hugs

I love the idea of simplifying your life...and yes, you have inspired me with your very practical suggestions for simplifying the holidays...so much more important to spend time with loved ones than to spend time doing dishes!!! 10. Interesting how you mentioned de-cluttering because that is one of my most favorite things to do. I usually find lost treasures when I do that, and I love the empty space I acquire too! I also used disposables this past holiday season. In fact we are having all our kids in town over tomorrow for dinner and I already have my china-like paper plates out and ready! I hope you keep us posted on your resolutions. I'm always looking for new ways to do things.

  11. I really like all of your New Year's resolutions. Most of them are things I'm working on too. Christmas Eve is always great here because we usually have sandwiches and snacks. I use paper plates and this year reindeer cups LOL We don't have a sit down dinner. The important thing to me is like you say keeping my traditions and enjoying the time with my family. I use bags for most of my gifts. You can get two bags for a dollar at the dollar store and they look great with a little red or green tissue paper LOL I think there are ways to have wonderful celebrations and parties with out all of the expense and formality.

  12. I liked hearing the way you delegated and down-sized your Christmas prep. Well done!

I'm not recording ANYthing as a "resolution". Seems even that word scares us. Goals, however have always "helped me" (somehow) to stick to an intention and reach a desired objective. I recorded a few in my journal where I'll meet them daily as I continue to journal. I've kind of decided not to list them in one place on my blog lest I offend anyone.

  13. Hi Gal! That is a great list!! I think goal setting is a great idea. They say to also write down some steps to help us achieve our goals! I'm working on that one now!!

Hope you have an absolutely delightful new year, and will be praying that you will be able to check off at least half of your list at year's end!!

    Love ya!!

  14. What wonderful list!!! My list is very short...I resolve to live each day the best I can. My lists always seem to get lost or ignored. Thought I'd try this way for 2010. Wishing you a grand day and there is an extension of the Holiday for you at my post. My best! Cathy
