Happy Mother's Day!

I have many wonderful Mother’s Day memories, of course among them my very own first Mother’s Day (my oldest was only two months old at the time), and also celebrating my first Mother’s Day spent as a “Grandma” along with my daughter’s first Mother’s Day (my grandson was four months old at that time), and the first Mother’s Day for my daughter-in-law (my granddaughter was just a few weeks old then!), and so many wonderful Mother’s Days in between and since.

But today I’d like to honor my mother and the Blessed Mother with a memory of my Mom.
I remember once when I was little asking my Mom for paper and crayons to make her a card for Mother’s Day and she said to me that was very nice but that I shouldn’t forget our Mother in Heaven, I thought that was silly and I asked her how could I give the Blessed Mother something? And she told me that I could honor our Blessed Mother by honoring her Son, she told me how happy it makes Mary when we make Jesus happy, she told me the best gift anyone could give the Blessed Mother was to Love and Honor her Son.
My Mom was one smart woman.

Another childhood memory of Mother’s Day was the year my sister Diane made her First Holy Communion the day before Mother’s Day, and she used money that she had received as a Communion gift and we walked a few blocks to a florist and she purchased for my mother a Blessed Mother vase filled with yellow and white flowers. I thought it was the most beautiful thing ever and I knew my Mom would love it and she did!

And I also want to honor my big sister Marybeth, as she was almost like a ‘second’ mother to the four youngest in the family, she was always looking out for us, babysitting, doing the food shopping for my Mom, and fighting our battles for us. Thank you, Marybeth. Diane always said about us siblings that if we wanted to rely on anyone to be strong, anyone we could depend on, it would be the girls! No disrespect to my brothers, but over the years through all our trials, Diane is right, it is the ‘girls’ that could rely on each other, both physically and emotionally. We are women – hear us roar!!

Happy Mother’s Day to my sisters!

Happy Mother’s Day to both my mother in Heaven and to our Heavenly Mother!

  2. Eileen,
I loved your post today. Especially the photos of your mom and you with your sisters. You can see from your mothers smile that she was a sweet woman.I never had a sister but I can see from your photos that there was and is a lot of love and fun between you.Even with a thirteen year age difference,I can see the special bond that my two daughters have with each other. And you made me think of one year when I was 12 years old living in Chicago with my mom.She was on her own with my brother and I.I had no money that Mothers Day and I woke up at 6:00a.m. got on my bike and rode for blocks picking flowers from peoples gardens before anyone woke up to give to my mom that morning!I think I broke a commandment that year! Happy Mothers Day Eileen!
