DEAR JESUS I HAVE LONGED FOR YOU
Dear Jesus, I have longed for You
Since I was very small
Upon my mother's knee I learned
That You were not so tall
She said You were quite wonderful
In each and every way
And if I was a very good child
I'd be with You one day
She said You would be my Best Friend
And stay close by my side
She said You would take care of me
And that You were my Guide
Dear Jesus, on this special day
Please come into my heart
As I receive Your Holy Host
Please never let us part
I'm actually not positive of all the lyrics (other than the first verse) because my memory is so bad, but I think that's how it went. And I wish I knew music because then I could describe the tune, it's a haunting little tune, just the same tune over and over for each verse.
I've tried looking it up on-line but have found nothing. I think one of the Nuns who taught at O.L.B. S. wrote it, and I think it was only used the year that I made my First Holy Communion because my sister made hers the next year and it wasn't sung then.
I think many parents may have complained, I know my Mom was upset at first that we weren't singing "Oh, Lord, I Am Not Worthy", until she had me sing the song, and then she said she liked it very much and thought it was a sweet song for children to sing.
Weekend Forecast:
Saturday ~ just food shopping in the morning and shopping for school supplies for Jayden (I waited too long last year and there was not much left on the shelves!) then babysitting Mia in the afternoon and evening (our son and daughter-in-law have a wedding to attend).
Sunday ~ pool party!
Monday ~ Ray is off and I think we'll be going to the beach again!
I remember the prayer...but not the song. Both bring back fond memories of St. Mary's School where I attended through 2nd grade. Thanks and have a GRAND weekend! Cathy
ReplyDeletePoems and songs from our childhood do stick with us...Often hymns I heard in church as a young child, are hummed on automatic mode without thinking!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your grandchildren, pool party and beach Eileen!
Hi Eileen,
ReplyDeleteI loved the words to the little song, I would love to hear the tune. It really must have touched your heart if you have remembered it all this time. Have a wonderful weekend!
Hello my dear friend, reading about your childhood memory makes me realize just why I enjoy your post so much. I think your memory is great, Your plans for the weekend sound perfect, enjoy your grandchildren, pool party and making memories....big hugs and I so missed you......:-) Hugs
ReplyDeleteEileen, all I can think of, is how cute it would be if you could do a little video of you singing the song...come to think of it a little liturgical dance with it would be even better and I can even tell you an easy way to dress up as a nun for it with your very own bathroom towels!
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful holy card...did you save all of yours? I still have all of mine from grade school!
Did you read my comment on my post about Jackie today?
blessings and hugs,
marcy
Thanks for stopping by, Cathy, and you have a great weekend too! I've really been enjoying your posts!
ReplyDeleteWanda, I've been thinking so much lately of my childhood when I was really little before our family moved, and a lot about my First Holy Communion Day. I have no idea what brought it all to mind, but it's lingering.
Marcy, my sister Diane and I used to put pajama bottoms on our heads and pretend we were nuns, and if I could sing, I would do that for you and have Ray record it and post it for you!
Teresa, you have a good weekend too. I've been thinking a lot about you, and always looking to see if you've posted new. You are in my prayers.
Bernie, Welcome Home! You sound like you had a really good time, it was nice to see you posted again. We really, really missed having you in the village!
I have a lot of Holy Cards, but not so many from my childhood, only a few. I have to scour the attic because I know I came across a Sacred Heart pin that was given to me in grade school, and now I can't find it. I'm also sad that I no longer have my First Communion set. I'm happy I still have the St. Joseph Missal that my Mom and Dad gave me that following Christmas though!
I just went to see your comment now. Poor Jackie, she must feel so out of touch!
You know, I'm so dense, when I read your comment about your birthday coming up ~ when is it, by the way? I started thinking about Diana's post and saying something about a birthday ice cream cake and I was just assuming that was the name of the cake, but is it her birthday???!!
I have to go find out now!
Have a great weekend everyone!
Love, Eileen
Look what happened with my comment! It got jumbled! That happened to me twice before! Is it blogger? Is it my computer? Keyboard? What the heck?!
ReplyDeleteOr a SCARIER thought yet...is it...could it be...the USER?!?
ReplyDeleteRay is SUCH a nice guy, so PLEASE get him to record you singing...oh please please...it would be a gift to the world!!
Eileen...Thank you for posting the song that means so much to you. It is very touching.
ReplyDeleteThanks to Marcy (she's on the ball; she had covered for me today. I asked her to puhleeze let anyone know that I was not snubbing their comments (since mine have to be approved before posting...) My server decided to take the day off. What did I doooo before computers? (My husband said that I had a life... :)) )He's joking; he knows that blogging is a wonderful outlet and outreach...and it brings people together and closer that might never have met.
Your upcoming weekend sounds wonderful!! Have the best time.
Hugs and smiles to you from Jackie
P.S. When is Marcy's birthday. I think the world should know....!!! :)))
Those songs we learned as children - OH, how precious! Pajama bottoms over your heads & playing nuns? I can just SEE it! I hope your time at beach and pool are as relaxing as my time away! It's good to be back. But (as I told Bernie) I was glad to find out blogging is not yet an addiction with me! I survived away from the computer (although I took a few pictures with my blog in mind).
ReplyDeleteHi Sweetie!! What a precious little song!! We all want to see the pajama on your head routine!! :o) A delightful post! I'm sure you'll have a great time at the beach!!
ReplyDeleteLove and hugs,
Becky
